Why coaching works
A transformative way to build lasting success
There are many things I love about coaching, both from my experience as a year‑long client and as a practicing coach. What stands out most to me is this: the coachee is always in charge and discovers solutions from within. The coach is there only as a guide.
A method based on values
I graduated from the Coach Akademie Schweiz, a Swiss-based institution that has developed its own coaching method (“SCM”). It is values-based and can greatly help people in a variety of situations, such as:
Everyone facing a life crisis
People who want to make a fundamental change
People who feel stuck in their careers but don’t know what else they could do
Parents who are overwhelmed and looking for ways to handle challenging situations with their kids
Couples facing relationship issues
Managers and leaders who want to improve
Team development
The list is endless.
The theory behind coaching in general is that we all carry the solutions to our problems within us, but sometimes we need help to access them.
Instead of focusing on superficial goals (a new car, a new house, a new job, a new spouse, etc.), the SCM method helps the coachee identify their most important value in life. By re-organizing the coachee’s inner world to progress towards this value, goals might get achieved as well (or completely change).
A systemic approach
When coaching a person, the coach must consider that the individual is part of various social systems. In systemic coaching, the person and their issue are not viewed in isolation but in the context of their family of origin, partnerships, circle of friends or acquaintances, as well as professional systems such as companies, teams, or colleagues. It is assumed that we are in constant interaction with other people and systems and that there are reciprocal dynamics between private and professional environments. In systemic coaching, the client becomes aware that everything is interconnected and that changes always lead to changes elsewhere. When we change, we change the entire system.
Looking to the future, consideration is given not only to what needs to be done but also to what the consequences of inaction would be. Including all relevant systems in the change process can help the coachee become aware of typical behavioral patterns that repeatedly occur in connection with the problem, and also open up new goal-oriented courses of action.
Results
I have been coached many times over the past 15 years, and it has helped me tremendously making better decisions and navigating life’s complexities. Without coaching, I would have never founded my own business, nor would I understand my own values and what truly drives me.
